Classic Style Gates vs. Mortise Joinery Style

Two of the most common styles of wooden gates are the Mortise Joinery gate and the classic style gate.

The Mortise Joinery style gate is easy to recognize by its decorative infill below the braces. A Mortise Joinery gate’s frame is formed by the uprights and braces, also known as cross members. Each part of the gate is cut to fit and joined with glue and fasteners, which are usually stainless steel. The front and back of a Mortise Joinery gate are identical.

A classic style gate is distinguished from a Mortise Joinery gate by its box frame. The box frame is made with glue and coated screws. Coated screws are then used to attach the boards to the outside of the frame. The front and back of a classic style gate are very obvious.
