Board discusses plan to build fence around airport

A special meeting was held by the Airport Advisory Board in order to discuss the plans to build a fence around the Illinois Valley Airport last week.

The current plan calls for a chain link fence to surround the airport and separate the historic Smokejumper Base and the airport. The base is a historical site for the area because it is where airplanes would parachute firefighters in order for them to get to remote destinations quickly so that they could control forest fires if needed.

Although operations no longer run, the new fence would damage some of the features of the base. This is creating controversy as well as the fear that the fence will change the look and feel of the airport.
